Dry Type Power Transformers

Kampa builds dry type power transformers from 30 kVA to 2,500 kVA at 6 kV, 10 kV, 20 kV and 35 kV, using cast resin windings for indoor installation where oil is not permitted or not wanted. No oil means no bunding, no fire-rating argument and no periodic oil test, which is why dry type dominates inside buildings, tunnels, metro stations and data centres.

Why Choose Kampa

Kampa offers high-performance medium and high-voltage power distribution solutions that combine reliability, efficiency, and competitive pricing. Our products are designed to optimize performance while reducing total cost of ownership, helping your business achieve more for less.

Kampa medium-voltage and high-voltage power transmission and distribution solutions combine advanced technology with reliable performance to meet the power needs of various industries and cities.

Products Advantage

Dry type transformers remove the oil and with it the bunded room, the fire-rating argument and the periodic oil test. The winding is cast in epoxy resin under vacuum, so the insulation is solid and the unit can sit inside a building, a tunnel or a basement without a dedicated fire compartment.

The trade-off is thermal. Cast resin has a lower short-term overload capability than oil, which is why the insulation class and the cooling arrangement matter more on this family than on an oil unit. AN cooling is the standard build; AF forced cooling adds roughly 40 percent capacity on the same frame without changing the footprint. Class F is the default insulation, with class H specified where the ambient is high or the load profile is severe.

What is a dry type power transformer?

A dry type power transformer changes voltage using windings insulated with solid material, usually epoxy cast resin, instead of oil. With no liquid to contain or test, it can be installed inside a building without a bunded oil room or a dedicated fire compartment.

How does a dry type transformer stay cool without oil?

Heat moves from the winding through the cast resin and the core to the surrounding air. Natural air cooling (AN) is the standard build. Forced air cooling (AF) adds fans and roughly 40 percent more capacity on the same frame, at the cost of a fan supply and a slightly higher noise level.

Where are dry type transformers normally installed?

Indoors: plant rooms, commercial building substations, tunnels and metro stations, data centres, and anywhere the fire authority will not accept an oil-filled unit. Enclosure IP rating is chosen against the room conditions, from IP20 in a clean switch room to IP54 in a dusty plant.

How do I choose the kVA rating and loss class?

The kVA comes from the connected load with the future margin agreed with the client, not from the transformer alone. The loss class is a separate decision: a lower-loss build costs more up front and less over the life of the unit. Ask for the no-load and load loss figures and compare them against the tariff rather than against the purchase price.

What maintenance does a dry type transformer need?

Less than an oil unit, but not none. Winding and core cleaning on a schedule, a check of the temperature control and the alarm setpoints, a torque check on the connections at commissioning and after the first year, and a visual inspection of the cast resin for cracks or partial discharge tracks.
